About the LEAP Lessons

Designed to be integrated with any curriculum, each grade level includes 18-20 one-hour lessons to be conducted throughout the school year. Each LEAP lesson lasts about an hour is designed to fit within a typical daily math instructional period. Each lesson is divided into the following areas:

Plan

  • Lesson Overview/Objectives/Rationale
  • Vocabulary
  • Lesson Materials List

Teach

  • Big Idea
  • Jumpstart Activity– Designed to help students review previously learned concepts or think about new concepts that will be addressed in a given lesson. Approximately 15 minutes.
  • Explore & Discuss – The heart of the lesson involves one or more investigative activities. Usually small-group or partner activities. Whole-class discussions are used to examine students’ thinking and build mathematical understanding. Approximately 10 minutes.

  • Teaching Suggestions/Common Difficulties

Assess

  • Review & Discuss – Whole-class discussions to summarize the core ideas of a lesson and to provide an ongoing formative assessment of student’s thinking.


Sample Lessons
